Mid back and rib pain

When a deep breath is the thing you notice

The band across your mid back and ribs that makes twisting to back out of a parking space, or a full breath in, the moment you actually feel it. Mahle Chiropractic in New Castle looks at how that part of your back is actually moving.

Chapter 01

Three doctors, over 20 years on Decker Dr

Mahle Chiropractic has been on Decker Dr in New Castle since 2000, over 20 years serving Lawrence County. Dr. Mitchell Mahle founded the practice, and Dr. Kelsey Bowser and Dr. Christopher Argiro have joined him since. All three doctors played sports themselves and worked through injuries of their own before they were the ones doing the adjusting.

Same day appointments are usually available, and Spanish speaking representatives are on staff. Call (724) 656-9050 to get on the schedule, or ask about the flat $30 in-season student athlete rate, which covers adjustment and therapy with a parent or guardian along on the first visit. Veterans can ask in the office about how the practice gives back.

The band between your shoulder blades

Mid back and rib pain has a habit of showing up in the moments you'd rather not think about your back at all. A full breath in catches partway. Twisting to check over your shoulder while backing out of a parking space pulls at something across the ribs. A long drive or a full shift at a desk leaves that band between the shoulder blades tight by the time you stand up.

It's rarely one dramatic moment. More often it's posture that's added up over a week, hunched over a wheel or a keyboard, and the mid back is the part that ends up holding the tension the rest of the day didn't leave anywhere else to go.

Chapter 03

Two ways to be adjusted through the mid back

Manual adjusting delivers a small force by hand, directed at the exact angle of the joint, to restore the motion a mid back or rib joint has lost. Instrument style adjusting does the same job differently, using speed rather than force. Sigma Instruments reads how tight the joint is first, then a gentle tapping puts motion back into it, with the computer comparing the joint's movement before and after.

Which one you get in New Castle depends on the joint itself, how you feel about a manual adjustment, and your age. It's a decision made together with whichever of the three doctors is seeing you, not a set path for every mid back complaint.

Therapies that support a tight mid back

Ultrasound therapy is used to break up tightness in the muscle tissue around the ribs and mid back, easing trigger points and bringing extra blood flow to the area. Electric stimulation, delivered by pad or by hand, helps the muscle contract in a more natural way, which can ease spasm and bring back range of motion.

Cupping therapy is also available, using localized suction around trigger points and tight muscle to decrease spasm, decrease inflammation, and increase circulation. Which of these gets added to an adjustment depends on what's actually tight that day.
